Skradin

Skradin, one of the oldest Croatian towns which dates back to the Illyrian era, is located at the entrance to the Krka National Park and a very important and popular nautical destination in this part of the Adriatic. Due to its extremely important strategic position, Skradin was besieged by the Avars, Ottomans and Venetians. At almost every corner, you will be able to witness its rich and turbulent history that has left its mark on Skradin. The entire historic town center and the houses with its colorful facades that were built in the 18th and 19th centuries under the influence of the Venetian style are a protected cultural monument. Skradin’s narrow alleys meet at the main street that leads to the Square of the Blessed Virgin, where the parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the rectory and the town hall are located. The Turina Fortress, also known as the Fortress of Ban Pavao Šubić of Bribir, is the remnant of the Skradin castle that towers from a hill over the town.

In the vicinity of Skradin lies the village Bribir and the valuable archaeological site Bribirska glavica, which was the center of the Croatian State in the 13th century and is now listed as a cultural monument of the highest category. It was right here on Bribirska glavica that Saint Nicholas Tavelić, the first Croatian saint, joined the Franciscan order in the monastery of St. Mary in 1375. Admirers of natural beauties will enjoy the diversity and charm of the Dalmatian karst along the Krka river, but also the magnificent waterfalls Skradinski Buk and Roški slap, Lake Prokljan, the landscape of the river Guduća and the scenic canyon of the river Čikola, the largest tributary of the Krka River that is protected as a significant landscape since 1965.

Traces of human presence dating from the Paleolithic (around 18.000 years B.C.) have been found in the caves of the canyon. Round off your visit to Skradin by enjoying the specialties that are unique to this area, such as koprtlja (meat specialty), the famous Skradin risotto that is traditionally prepared by men or other seafood delicacies such as bijot (eel broth) and čokalica (fried small fish that lives between the upper layer of freshwater of the river Krka and the lower seawater layer). The delicious Skradin cake, a traditional dessert made of almonds, walnuts and honey, as well as candied almonds and dried figs are also widely known and very popular.
