Southern Dalmatia holds a true treasure of extraordinary beauty, lush coniferous forests and a coastline indented by a series of bays and coves, which along with numerous cliffs, shallow waters and islets, hides wonderful white beaches bathed in turquoise blue sea. The treasure’s name is island Korčula. According to legend, Korkyra was a nymph who was turned into an island paradise by jealous Poseidon. Korčula or Korkyra Melaina, as it was called by the ancient Greeks, is a jewel of historical heritage, which is best reflected in the town of Korčula that is famous as the birthplace of world traveler Marco Polo. Korčula's medieval squares with its harmonious stone houses and towers are often compared to the nearby world-famous Dubrovnik for their exceptional beauty.
Moreška, the dance of knights, is traditionally performed in Korčula and a unique experience that can be enjoyed only on this island. On the way towards Lumbarda and its famous beaches Pržina and Bilin žal, you will pass numerous villages and hamlets in whose taverns you can taste homemade olive oils, spoil yourself with dried figs or almonds and taste some premium Korčula wines. The dessert wine Grk is produced from a vine that grows only in the sandy soils of Lumbarda, while the premium wines of Pošip grapes are made in the vicinity of Čara. Vela Luka overlooks the nearby island of Hvar and was formed near the Neolithic site of Vela Spilja. Small fishing villages such as Gršćica, Prižba and Brno will surely win you over at first sight, while the beautiful beaches Pupnatska luka, Žitna and Tri žala are images worth capturing on camera. Those looking for a piece of paradise just for themselves will find beautiful small islands around Korčula, whose hidden beaches are just waiting to be discovered.
