Amidst green hills on the island’s western side lies Blato, the largest settlement on the island. Blato has been proudly preserving its tradition in the Ethno-house Barilo where many exhibits testify to the rich history of the place and island. Particularly interesting is the knightly dance Kumpanija, which is traditionally performed in Blato in memory of the victory over the Ottomans. While wandering along the numerous alleys or peeking into the taverns of Blato, you will be delighted to hear the traditional a capella singing with which the inhabitants of this place are born and die. Blato is also known for the Sanctuary of Blessed Marija Petković, so many pilgrims visit this place every year. We recommend finding an accommodation in apartments and holiday houses in the surrounding bays near Blato. On the north side, overlooking island Hvar and peninsula Pelješac, are the bays: Babina, Prigradica, Črnja Luka, Kurija, Popov Ratak, Naplovci, Rasoha, Sprtiška, while the southern bays are Prišćapac, Prižba, Gršćica, Karbuni and Triporte, which are overlooking the island Lastovo.
When visiting Blato, don't miss to taste the delicious sweet bread Lumblija from Blato, which is spiced with cinnamon, almonds, walnuts, dried figs and other dried fruits as well as lemon and orange peel. According to legend, a soldier of Napoleon came up with the recipe for Lumblija out of love for a local woman. Giving her this cake, he said: "N'oublie pas", (Don't forget me!), which she heard as lumblija and hence this is how the famous Korčula dessert got its name.
