On the east cape of the island of Hvar is located the fishing village Sućuraj. The history of Sućuraj, which is longer then 2300 years, was created along with Croats by many other nations who once ruled this territory leaving their marks in architecture and culture alike. Sućuraj has been demolished and rebuilt again and again throughout history; the oldest building is the Franciscan monastery (once Augustan). The cute inter-connecting in building stone houses with closed streets indicate a specific style of construction conditioned by the constant danger of pirates from the river Neretva. Today’s parish church of St. George by whom the village got its name was built at the end of the 19th century. Interesting is also the baroque church of St. Antony from 1663 as well as the Venetian fort from 1613. The pleasant climate, abundance of sun and the refreshing breeze of the summer mistral along with several sand beaches and hidden coves, as well as the untouched nature make Sućuraj the place where everyone can find their place to relax. Unavoidable pleasures certainly offer the restaurants with their offer of first class fresh fish and top-quality wines.
Beaches in the vicinity of Sućuraj are Česminica and Bilina. A beautifuly arranged sand beach Česminica is situated on the south shore of the island where you will enjoy long summer days in the shadow of tamaris and you can find refreshments in the nearby bar.The beach Bilina is situated on the north shore of the island, where you will, lying on the white stone mats, enjoy the impressive view of the mountain Biokovo and Makarska’s coast.
Sućuraj can be reached by the road from Hvar or direct connection by land via the harbour of Drvenik.
