Lastovo, island Lastovo, southern Dalmatian islands

Lastovo is a fairytale oasis of peace, where time has stood still behind the wooden shutters and where the Lastovo chimneys, the island’s landmark, tell stories from ancient times. The island has proudly been preserving its customs, traditions and folklore over the centuries. The town has several medieval churches and the oldest building is the 15th-century parish Church of St. Cosmas and Damian. The traditional construction style of Dalmatia is evident at every corner, particularly in the meticulously decorated chimneys.

A custom that is unique and made the island well-known, is the Lastovo carnival, which is famous for being one of the most picturesque on the Adriatic. All islanders participate in this event, which is organized in memory of a historical event 500 years ago. Namely, Moorish pirates, who were attacking Korčula, sent a messenger to tell the people of Lastovo to surrender. The brave islanders decided not to do so, but set off in a procession to St. George, seeking protection from the attackers. Legend has it that a storm suddenly arose over the sea, sinking the Moorish ships. The islanders celebrated their victory by capturing the messenger and humiliating him by taking him on a donkey through the village, condemning him to death by burning. Every year, the people of Lastovo revive the victory over the pirates, thus preserving their customs and folklore.
