The Northern Velebit National Park is an exceptional reserve where the rich diversity of nature is intertwined with man’s history and the traces he left in this stunning environment. Rough rocks, lush forests and spacious karst valleys, among which pits, sinkholes, ponds and ravines alternate with gentle dales and wide meadows, and where shepherd's dwellings and dry stone walls bear testimony to the presence of people, are just a part of this unique landscape. There are numerous peaks and mountain trails that have been luring nature lovers, alpinists and mountaineers from all over the world into this magnificent landscape for many years.
One of the most visited peaks of the Northern Velebit is Zavižan, where the meteorological station is located. In its immediate vicinity is the precious Velebit Botanical Garden that was established in 1967, where visitors can learn more about the diversity of the plants that grow on the Velebit mountain slopes. The beautiful karst valley of Veliki Lubenovac is located on the very edge of the nature reserve Hajdučki and Rožanski Kukovi, where the famous pond called Lubenovačka Ruj has been preserved. This valley is particularly special due to the numerous remains of shepherds’ “summer huts” and dry stone walls.
The national park also features the famous Premužić trail, which leads from Rožanski Kukovi to several peaks with exceptionally beautiful views.
Alan and the surrounding area is a locality in the southern part of the park that awards nature lovers with breath-taking mountain pastures bathed in the sun and a view of the endless blue sea. Traces of past times can be found at every step, from the remains of stone huts and animal shelters to traditional dry stone walls. Wherever you go in this unique park, you will get to know the magnificent, somewhat wild and unrestrained nature, to which you will always return with equal excitement.
