Almost completely reduced to rubble during the Serbian aggression against Croatia, the town of Vukovar after the peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Podunavlje in 1998, has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. And today, just as the scars of that war suffering are visible on the historical buildings so they are on the hearts of the inhabitants. However the people of Vukovar are persistent in renovation so that this town at the confluence of the river Vuka and the Danube, is becoming increasingly attractive to a growing number of visitors. Of course visit Vukovar Water Tower – a symbol of Croatian unity, the castle of the Eltz family from the 18th century in which is the Vukovar town museum, the Franciscan monastery with the church of Saint Phillip and Saint Jacob, the birthplace of Nobel laureate Lavoslav Ružička, the former Grand Hotel and especially the attractive baroque centre. Vukovar has a beautiful long footpath, directly alongside the Danube which leads from the river harbour all the way to the confluence of the river Vuka and the Danube and beyond. Outside the town, go to the Ovčara Memorial Museum, located on the site of the Serbian concentration camp and to Vučedol, a rich archaelogical find from the Eneolithic period (4th and 3rd centuries BC), but also visit the spots that are known for fishing and bathing.
