Umag is located on the narrow peninsula which encompasses a small bay and besides Savudrija, this is the westernmost place in Croatia. On the peninsula, which once was an island, lies the old town centre, which the Romans built and to whom they gave the name Umacus. The beaches on the Umag riviera spread all the way from the cape of Savudrija, to Novigrad, south of Umag. With its narrow streets and picturesque squares, and with its luxurious venetian palaces, Umag has retained its medieval look, which is emphasised even more by the partly preserved town walls and their 14th century towers.
Umag today is not attractive simply because of its legacy from the past. Already it is known far and wide as an oasis of sport tourism. Each year at the end of July the Croatia Open ATP tournament, an international tennis tournament is traditionally held in the Stella Maris camp, which has turned Umag into one of the most famous Croatian tourist places. However you don't have to be just tennis mad to make your way to Umag. Along the length of the Umag riviera, you can play minigolf, football, enjoy bowling, riding, hunting, bicycling and a number of other activities. When it comes to sea sports then at your disposal are sailing, surfing, water-skiing, diving and speargun-fishing. Aside from that, Umag has a well-developed conference and health based tourism. With a large number of hotels, apartments and campsites, you will certainly find accomodation to your taste.
