Vrbnik

On top of a rock that emerges from the blue sea lies ancient Vrbnik on the eastern coast of island Krk. The harmonious stone houses are densely arranged around the imposing bell tower that dominates the village. Namely, the Glagolitic alphabet is the oldest Croatian alphabet, and most of the preserved documents written in this alphabet originate from the island of Krk. The vineyards of Vrbnička Žlahtina, the island’s famous yellow-coloured wine that tastes sweet as honey, are located, as its name indicates near Vrbnik along the Baška-Krk road. The village’s winemakers made an experiment and stored the wine in the sea for fermentation. Their result was a sparkling wine of exceptional quality and taste. Every year in July, the Žlahtina Festival is traditionally held in Vrbnik, during which all wine cellars in the area open their doors to visitors, who then have the chance to taste not only top local wines, but also other indigenous delicacies such as olive oil, honey, organically produced syrups and homemade jams. Another interesting gastronomic event and a reason to visit Vrbnik are the Days of Šurlice, when visitors can enjoy their favourite handmade pasta with various delicious sauces. The Wine Days of the island of Krk are held in August, so fans of a good drop can taste, besides said Vrbnička Žlahtina, also other premium wines from different parts of Croatia.
