Smokvica

Head from the bay of Brna to the interior of the island of Korčula and you will find yourself in magnificent vineyards and olive groves. It is amidst this green sea of ​​vines that one of the island’s oldest settlements, the picturesque village Smokvica, emerges. The remains of an Illyrian hillfort testify to life in this area as early as the 2nd millennium BC. Its harmonious stone houses, narrow streets and a bell tower with a church in the middle of the village represent a classic example of traditional Dalmatian architecture.

Thanks to the long tradition of winemaking, there is almost no family here that does not grow vines and produce wine today. True wine lovers who are not familiar with Korčula's famous Pošip wine from Smokvica are rare. The inhabitants of Smokvica have kept their customs over centuries as can be seen in the chivalrous dance Kumpanija and the numerous legends and myths that they have been narrating to their children. The most famous one is about the unhappy love of the mermaid Nera and Antonio, according to which Nera, before she had to leave her beloved, had her hair carved into the rocks of the cove at the foot of the Ledina field. All you have to do is visit Smokvica and discover another of the many legends of this region with a glass of Pošip wine and sweet homemade hrstule, maybe the one about Odysseus admiring the bay of Brna or the story of the fairies from Vilin Dol.
