Omišalj stretches along a long bay on the northwest coast of island Krk. The area of Omišalj has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but it became particularly important in Roman times due to its strategic location and when the Roman municipality of Fulfinium was established. Its remains, as well as the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 5th century can still be seen in the bay Sepen near Omišalj. Every year in July, the ancient Fulfinium revives these past times by hosting traditional ancient evenings, during which visitors within a picturesque ancient ambience learn more about the customs, crafts and gastronomic offer of this period. The town itself is adorned with the Church of the Assumption from the 12th century, around which narrow rows of houses, stone streets and small squares create a harmonious picture. The local Lapidarium houses a collection of interesting stone monuments, while numerous remains of medieval fortifications testify to the turbulent past of this place.
Today, Omišalj has developed into a real small tourist gem in the Kvarner region thanks to the very good transport connections. Namely, it is connected to the mainland by the Krk bridge, to neighbouring islands by many ferry lines and to the world by the Rijeka airport, which is near Omišalj and especially busy during the tourist season. Well-equipped and modern apartments, holiday homes and villas with pools offer accommodation to the highest standards. Apart from the fact that it is easy reachable, Omišalj has not only a rich cultural and historical heritage, but also features beautiful pebble beaches awarded with blue flags, an indented coastline, crystal clear sea and irresistible nature. Do not miss a romantic walk in the forest park Dubec. With a little luck, you will find yourself in Omišalj during the celebration of the Assumption of Mary when the traditional dance Stomorina is performed on the town square. Traditional dishes such as homemade pasta called Šurlice, lamb stew, shrimp prepared in buzara-style are offered in almost all local restaurants and taverns. Discover this little holiday gem and enjoy a well-deserved vacation.
